At some point, learning stops being about simply noticing patterns and starts becoming about making connections. Building Thinking Skills Book 1 helps your child take that next step by strengthening the reasoning skills that support success across every subject.
Designed for students in grade 3, this 320-page workbook develops four core analytical skills: classification, analogies, sequences, and similarities and differences. Along the way, your child also uses deductive reasoning, Venn diagrams, map skills, visual-spatial thinking, and other tools to organize and analyze information.
The activities are carefully sequenced to build confidence while steadily increasing in complexity. Rather than relying on memorization, your child learns to compare ideas, identify relationships, recognize patterns, and draw logical conclusions. These are the same skills students use when solving math problems, interpreting reading passages, conducting science investigations, and making sense of new information.
One of the things we appreciate about Book 1 is that it teaches children to slow down and look for connections. A puzzle that first appears confusing often becomes surprisingly manageable once your child learns to organize the information and think through it step by step.
As students work through analogies, logic exercises, and visual reasoning challenges, they learn to look beyond the obvious answer and support their conclusions with evidence. Those habits carry over into every subject area—and often into everyday life as well.
Many children begin the book by relying on guesses and intuition. By the end, they're more likely to look for patterns, eliminate possibilities, and explain their thinking. That's a meaningful shift, and it's exactly what this series is designed to encourage.
Research on the Building Thinking Skills series has shown measurable gains in academic performance, and the program has earned recognition from educators, homeschoolers, and organizations such as Mensa.
For children who are ready to move beyond basic thinking exercises, Building Thinking Skills Book 1 provides a thoughtful introduction to the analytical skills that support deeper learning and stronger problem-solving.
