Crossing Broadway: Washington Heights and the Promise of New York CityIn the 1970s, when the South Bronx burned and the promise of New Deal New York and postwar America gave way to despair, the people of Washington Heights at the northern tip of Manhattan were increasingly vulnerable. In the 1970s, when the South Bronx burned and the promise of New Deal New York and postwar America gave way to despair, the people of Washington Heights at the northern tip of Manhattan were increasingly vulnerable. The Heights had long been a neighborhood where generations of newcomers--Irish, Jewish, Greek, African American, Cuban, and Puerto Rican--carved out better lives in their adopted city. But as New York City shifted from an industrial base to a service economy, new immigrants from the Dominican Republic struggled to gain a foothold. Then the crack epidemic of the 1980s and the drug wars sent Washington Heights to the brink of an urban nightmare. But it did not go over the edge.Robert W. Snyder's Crossing Broadway tells how disparate groups overcame their mutual suspicions to rehabilitate housing, build new schools, restore parks, and work with the police to bring safety to streets racked by crime and fear. It shows how a neighborhood once nicknamed "Frankfurt on the Hudson" for its large population of German Jews became "Quisqueya Heights"--the home of the nation's largest Dominican community. The story of Washington Heights illuminates New York City's long passage from the Great Depression and World War II through the urban crisis to the globalization and economic inequality of the twenty-first century. Washington Heights residents played crucial roles in saving their neighborhood, but its future as a home for working-class and middle-class people is by no means assured. The growing gap between rich and poor in contemporary New York puts new pressure on the Heights as more affluent newcomers move into buildings that once sustained generations of wage earners and the owners of small businesses.Crossing Broadway is based on historical research, reporting, and oral histories. Its narrative is powered by the stories of real people whose lives illuminate what was won and lost in northern Manhattan's journey from the past to the present. A tribute to a great American neighborhood, this book shows how residents learned to cross Broadway--over the decades a boundary that has separated black and white, Jews and Irish, Dominican-born and American-born--and make common cause in pursuit of one of the most precious rights: the right to make a home and build a better life in New York City.

Good quality and cannot beat the value you get with a suit
Size: Medium, Color: Black
I recently purchased the WEEN CHARM Men's Suits Slim Fit for my son's homecoming and I must say, I am impressed with the quality and fit of this suit. Firstly, the material used in this suit is of exceptional quality. The fabric feels soft and smooth, and it has a nice weight to it which gives it a luxurious feel. The suit doesn't feel cheap or flimsy at all. The slim fit design is impeccable. It hugs my son's body in all the right places, giving him a sharp and stylish look. The suit is tailored to perfection and accentuates his physique beautifully. I also appreciate the attention to detail in the craftsmanship. The stitching is neat and sturdy, and there were no loose threads or flaws that I could find. The suit looks like it was made with care and precision. Additionally, the suit was surprisingly comfortable. My son didn't complain about any discomfort or restriction of movement throughout the evening, which is always a plus. The only reason I haven't given it a five-star rating is because the suit did require some minor alterations for a perfect fit. Nonetheless, this is a small inconvenience considering the overall satisfaction we had with this purchase. In conclusion, I highly recommend the WEEN CHARM Men's Suits Slim Fit. It is a stylish, well-made suit that will definitely make a statement at any formal event. My son looked dashing in it and received many compliments.

Fit like a glove and soft to the touch.
Size: Small, Color: Black
My son loved the suit. It was not itchy. The fabric was soft. He did not like the vest but it is because he normally wears baggy clothes. He did not want a slim fit suit but he ended feeling good in it. For the price you can't miss. He is 140 lbs and is 5'7". We used the sizing chart for reference and bought size small. The length and waist of the pants were perfect and the arms were just right.

Awesome value! Great fit!
Size: XX-Large, Color: Black
Complete men's suit for under $70!!! Crazy!! My husband is thrilled with this suit! We ordered a XXXL but it was a bit baggy. Ordered the double XL and it was perfect! Husband is 6'1, waist 38, broad chested. No adjustments or hemming needed! Love it!
