A memoir, historical record, and educational guide all in one. Dr. Doug’s Animal Answers captures his journey to becoming a veterinarian and his many experiences with his animal patients, the ones who could not speak - and their special owners - while working a mixed animal practice in Southern Maine. Dr. Hutchins also includes an intriguing history of veterinary medicine from its infancy to present day, as well as a special section on Lyme Disease for animal owners to become better acquainted with its diagnosis, treatment, and prevention.

A fascinating and informative read, Dr. Doug’s Animal Answers explores a profession that is widely used but not completely understood.

About the Author:

After obtaining his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Maine he went on to graduate from the New York State College of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell University in 1970.

After a year working in Long Island, New York, Dr. Hutchins purchased a mixed animal practice in Springvale, Maine. Four years later he moved his practice, The Down Maine Veterinary Clinic to Sanford, Maine in a new 5,000 square foot facility. This practice expanded to four veterinarians and was later sold as Dr. Hutchins began his own consulting and equine practice specializing in lameness and reproduction.

Dr. Hutchins has served as president of the Maine Veterinary Medical Association, a director of the Maine Standardbred Breeders and Owners Association, as well as its vice-president. He has also served as an advisor to the Kennebunk Animal Shelter and York County Community College’s animal technician program. Dr. Hutchins has won many awards including the Maine Veterinary Medical Association's Annual Service award while spending time working with the Maine State Police and the York County Sheriff’s canines. Currently, he resides at his horse farm, Cricket Hill, in Lyman, Maine, with his wife, Shirley. Together they have three daughters, seven grandchildren, boxer dogs and two cats. Dr. Hutchins continues to be active in the owning, breeding, and racing of Standardbred trotters.

Reviews:

"'The Best Part Of Everyday Was My Patients, The Ones That Could Not Speak’
Maine author Dr. Douglass B. Hutchins earned his advanced degree in Animal Science
and his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Cornell University and has served as
president of the Maine Veterinary Medical Association. In this very fine memoir Dr. Doug
shares his incentives to enter veterinary medicine from his childhood dream to his
progress through his schooling to his establishing his practice in Maine where he
practiced his craft for over forty years.
One of the many aspects of this entertaining and informative book that makes it such an
invaluable read is the author’s conversational manner of relating not only his personal
history, but also his experiences with animal patients and their owners. Memorable
moments abound, as in his sharing the Horse Lady, families of beloved dogs, the
importance of keeping ‘people meds’ away from animals, and other stories of his
experiences with ill animals (and porcupines and heartworms!) and their people
families. The Human-Animal Bond expressed in these stories is not only sensitive in
caring but also illuminating in Dr. Doug’s diagnostic acumen and other fine attributes as
a veterinarian. He even shares the aspects of holidays on animal care – and illness
prevention.
Of particular interest is the author’s section on Interesting Cases in which he relates his
differential diagnostic techniques, treatment plans, and successful outcomes coupled
with his interaction with both animal patients and their families. After an enlightening
discussion of Lyme Disease, Dr Doug closes with a very solid, informed, and fascinating
history of the practice of veterinary medicine from the 18 th century to the present.
‘Veterinary medicine has a storied history and now had become much more than just a
doctor caring for the health and welfare of animals…By understanding this important
interrelationship of human and animal health, veterinary medicine gained increased
respect and stature.’ Hats off to a very fine doctor and his sensitive insights for animal
care!" - Grady Harp, MD, Amazon Top 100 Hall of Fame Reviewer, 5 Stars

"Dr. Doug’s Animal Answers is an informative, touching, and entertaining memoir and guide to all things animals! In his debut novel, Dr. Douglass B. Hutchins shares more than 45 years of personal experience as a veterinarian. The book begins with the author explaining why he decided to pursue veterinary medicine, telling a beautiful story about how a veterinarian once saved his grandfather's sick cow. He describes it as “the most magical and amazing thing” he had ever seen. That powerful moment inspired him to one day become the one doing the saving.
The author takes readers on a compelling journey, diving into personal anecdotes about the ups and downs of life as a veterinarian. He explores a wide range of topics, from caring for your animal during the holiday season to educating readers about Lyme disease. He also discusses the history of veterinary medicine and how it has evolved over time. This book is not only about caring for animals, but also about inspiring readers to chase their dreams and work hard to achieve their goals.
This book is especially informative when it comes to pet care and the process of choosing a life vocation. Dr. Hutchins proves himself to be both a talented writer and a dedicated veterinarian. He offers fresh insights that make the book unique and valuable, particularly in his discussion of the deep bond we have with animals. If you’re looking for an emerging memoir filled with practical pet-care tips and meaningful reflections on self-discovery, this book is for you!" - Lucy's Literature, 5-stars

AMAZING for my Doberman
Size: For Medium Dog, Color: Grassgreen, Size: For Medium Dog, Color: Grassgreen
This toy is the absolute BEST! It has out lasted every other toy by a long shot. So far it has lasted 7 months with a very tough chewer. No other toy has lasted more than a week or two aside from this one. I got this the same week I got my Doberman puppy. I am very impressed how well it has lasted so far. It’s still in great shape but is missing some of the “spikes” and has some tooth indents. Squeezer still works well too. It’s one of his favorite toys.

My Puppy Loves this Indestructible Dragon
Size: Large, Color: Pink, Size: Large, Color: Pink
My puppy (8 month old black lab mix) loves, loves, loves her dragon. She has had it for 2 months now. It is one of her favorites and gets daily rough play time. It's her go-to toy for fetch and tug games, as well as just general mouthy play. The squeaker gave out after about 4 weeks, but she would binge squeak for prolonged periods (kind of like chomping on gum) so it was almost a blessing when it went silent. She still chomps on it, but at least now I don't have to hear it. Other than the fact that it's a little grungy and bedraggled from so much loving, it is still in amazing shape. The seams and fur are all still intact. There are no visible holes, rips, or weak spots. I love Chew Guard Technology. This dragon replaced her goDog Iguana (from PetSmart) that developed a tear in the fur after about 4 months of heavy use. (It was superficial, just the outer fur layer and not the innards, but we disposed of it before she could eat more fur.) She can be pretty rough on her toys and I can never predict if any given toy will last minutes or months. The goDog stuffies definitely fall into the "months" category, even with rough daily use. Edit: The dragon lasted about 6 months of intensive, hard play before it developed a small tear in the fur. I patched it a couple times, but once my pup discovers a weak spot, it's the kiss of death for any stuffed item. We had to dispose of the dragon (so sad) to keep her from eating any more of the fur. We replaced the dragon with the goDog Chameleon, which is still going strong. I think we will go back to the dragon for our next toy because it's just so darned cute. We gave the dragon to my niece for her golden retriever puppy who is very chew-happy. That dragon is also doing well. You've just gotta love that chew-guard technology. This is one tough toy.

Indestructible Toys My Dobermans ❤️
Size: Large, Color: Mesh Green
Actually Respect! goDog Is a Lifesaver The variety of size and colors are phenomenal 😇 I have two Dobermans — serious, determined power chewers — and I’ve spent years trying to find toys that survive even a few days. I’ve tried the big brands (Kong, Goughnuts, Jolly Ball, you name it) — and while some toys last a little while, almost everything eventually ends up shredded, de-squeaked, or in pieces. goDog toys are the ONLY plush toys my Dobermans won’t destroy. We own multiple goDog toys now — dragons, dinosaurs, lizards — mostly in the large size (perfect for Dobermans), but even a few medium-sized ones hold up surprisingly well. Here’s what’s amazing: • They love them — actually carry them around, toss them, chew them gently, and squeak them happily. • They do not rip them apart — no matter how much tugging, chewing, or wrestling happens. • Large sizes are best for Dobermans (and other big breeds) — but even mediums survive for calmer play sessions. • No ripped seams, no stuffing everywhere, and no destroyed squeakers after months of use. What makes goDog toys different? The secret is their Chew Guard Technology — • A reinforced, high-strength inner mesh layer under the soft plush • Double-stitched seams • Durable yet flexible material that somehow resists punctures, tears, and brutal shaking The outside stays soft and fun, but the inside is built like armor. It’s NOT a super hard rubber or rough canvas — it still feels like a cuddle toy, but it’s engineered to survive serious chewing. Materials include: • Durable polyester plush • Chew Guard inner lining (high-tensile mesh fabric) • Reinforced stitching • Non-toxic squeakers • Safe for dogs to play with long-term Real Owner Advice: • Always size up if you have a heavy chewer — large sizes are a must for Dobermans or similarly strong breeds. • Medium sizes are fine if you supervise or your dog is more moderate with toys, but the large toys are built tougher overall. Final Thoughts: If you have big dogs, strong jaws, or just tired of wasting money on destroyed toys — goDog toys are a must. No other plush-style toy even comes close. My Dobermans will destroy almost anything… but they treat their goDog toys like treasured companions. No holes, no rips, just happy dogs. Follow me here on Amazon for more honest, dog-tested reviews! Surface Fabric is very durable
Size: Small, Color: Hot Pink
Surface Fabric is very durable, but the squeaker didn't last two months. I have urged the manufacturer to find a strong more durable squeaker for their product. My dogs really enoys it when the speaker works. One of his 3 work. I have just bought two more he likes them so much. He takes it to bed every night to catch it once or twice before sleeping. Also loves to catch it a few times during the day.
