The catwalk, often referred to as a "dogwalk," is an essential component of agility training. It consists of a slim, raised pathway with ramps at either end. The dog is required to ascend the bridge, walk steadily along the narrow beam, and safely descend on the opposite side.
Like all agility obstacles, mastering the catwalk involves training, practice, and effective collaboration between the dog and handler. Dogs need to learn how to confidently and swiftly cross the bridge without hesitation or losing their balance.
The height and width of the catwalk can be modified based on the dog's size and the level of competition. For novice dogs, the bridge can be set lower and wider, whereas more experienced dogs will encounter the full height and a narrower design of the obstacle.
Successfully traversing the catwalk requires the dog to maintain balance while moving across the beam. Handlers must instruct their dogs to approach the bridge on command, navigate confidently across the surface, and safely descend on the far side.
