The Chindits — officially the Long Range Penetration Groups — were one of the most extraordinary fighting formations of WWII. Conceived and led by the unconventional Brigadier Orde Wingate, they were designed to operate deep behind Japanese lines in the Burmese jungle, disrupting communications, raiding supply depots, and proving that Allied troops could match the Japanese in the most demanding terrain on earth.

Wingate chose regular soldiers — the King's Liverpool Rifles and Gurkhas among them — and subjected them to astonishingly arduous training for brutal marches and vicious close-quarters battles against a ruthless enemy. The Chindits carried everything they needed on their backs and on the backs of their trusty mules, relying on RAF air drops for essential resupply deep in the jungle. Their operations in 1943 and 1944 demonstrated that the Japanese could be fought and beaten on their own terms.
