Microchip SmartRAID 3102-8i Single

The Microchip SmartRAID 3102-8i Single is a high-performance, 12 Gbps Adaptec RAID adapter engineered for demanding servers, workstations, and storage-rich environments. Built to deliver maximum reliability and best-in-class throughput, this eight-port, low-profile RAID controller fits into MD2 form factor systems and leverages Microchip’s industry-leading Smart Storage stack to optimize data protection, caching, and RAID performance across multiple levels. Designed for dense storage configurations, the 3102-8i is ideal for companies that require robust multi-drive protection, seamless hot-swapping, and streamlined management in compact server bays. Whether you’re modernizing a data center, building a high-availability NAS, or expanding a business-critical storage array, the 3102-8i helps you achieve faster rebuilds, smoother online capacity expansion, and fewer interruptions to daily operations.

  • Eight internal SAS/SATA ports with 12 Gbps bandwidth deliver fast, scalable storage access for up to eight drives in a single PCIe Gen3 x8 channel, enabling high-throughput RAID arrays and efficient data workflows.
  • Low-profile MD2 form factor supports compact server chassis and 1U/2U deployments, making the 3102-8i a versatile upgrade for a wide range of enterprise and SMB systems without sacrificing expansion potential.
  • Advanced Smart Storage stack provides reliability and performance enhancements, including hardware-accelerated RAID calculations, data protection features, and efficient cache management to minimize latency during peak I/O operations.
  • Supports a comprehensive set of RAID levels (including common configurations like 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50, and 60) along with hot-spare and online capacity expansion capabilities, helping to maximize storage efficiency and uptime.
  • Robust management and monitoring through compatible Adaptec/Smart Storage tools, enabling easy RAID creation, monitoring, firmware updates, and alerting to maintain system health and data integrity in real time.

how to install Microchip SmartRAID 3102-8i Single

  • Power down the host system and unplug the power cord to prevent any electrical damage during installation.
  • Open the chassis and locate an available PCIe Gen3 x8 slot compatible with MD2 form factor cards; ensure there is adequate clearance for the card and any cables.
  • Insert the 3102-8i into the PCIe slot firmly until it is fully seated and secure it with a screw to prevent movement.
  • Connect any required power cables to the RAID controller if your motherboard or chassis design requires auxiliary power for the card’s onboard circuitry.
  • Attach SAS/SATA drive cables to the eight internal ports, following your planned disk topology; ensure cables are routed neatly to avoid obstruction to fans and other components.
  • Power on the system and enter the system BIOS/UEFI to verify the controller is detected; install the latest Adaptec/Smart Storage driver and management software as prompted by the operating system.
  • Launch the management utility to initialize the controller, create RAID arrays, configure cache settings if supported, and set up hot-spare drives; perform a quick sanity check before loading data onto the arrays.
  • Ensure you have a backup strategy in place and monitor the system for drive health, noting any smart alerts or drive degradation reported by the management interface.

Must Have Book for Investors or Sponsors/GPs wanting to Invest in Multifamily Properties!
Format: Paperback
If you understand the math and numbers associated with investing in real estate, this book will help you underwrite any multifamily property. Not only does Robert's book discuss how to gather the information needed for underwriting, he goes into detail on how sponsors can manipulate the numbers. This is a great book for knowledge on the pros and cons of varied partnership structures and how each can create an alignment of interest between limited partners (LPs) and general partners (GPs). Overall, this is a great easy read book.

Basic knowledge of underwriting is necessary to understand.
Format: Paperback
This is a great guide for underwriting multifamily deals for someone with some basic to moderate knowledge of underwriting. I am a new student to this field and have to stop and google some of the acronyms. For a future version, I think adding an extra page for the acronyms used, definition and equation would be helpful. I think that the font could be larger and darker. Adding mathematical formulas in the book would provide visualization as well. Rob can also provide a sample OM for the reader to use with his underwriting model and compare to his completed one. Again, I am a newbie so my review may change as I gain knowledge in this area. I enjoyed listening to Rob on Youtube/Podcast and hope to learn more from him.
